Network and Communications Design

Networking and communications are the backbone of your I.T. infrastructure. Get this right and anything is possible. Get it wrong, and you are in for a world of hurt.
With over 30 years experience, we know where you need to spend your money and also where it can be saved. We know which products will provide performance, reliability and value for money, which products are overpriced and expensive to maintain.

Fibre or Copper?

Each has it's benefits, and costs.

Fibre itself is not that expensive, but it must be installed correctly and terminating either end is where the costs start to mount. Fibre switches and network cards can be expensive. Fibre's biggest advantage is the distance that can be covered and the network speed, up to 10 Gbps. Use this if you are covering long distances or to connect servers, storage and switches which require high throughput or in electrically noisy environments.

Cat 5e/6 copper cable is inexpensive as are the terminations and is most commonly used in desktop wiring and can run at 1Gbps. It is more robust than fibre and is cheaper to install.
